Sound Trail

Sound sculptures at the sound trail in the Our Nature Reserve

We find ourselves in the Nature Park Our near Hoscheid, Luxembourg. There are over 17 sound stations installed along the 6.5 km long Sound Trail. They invite the wanderers to linger and make music, to listen to the sounds and to admire them. The MobileMusicMuseum has provided a sequence of Tubes and Bells for the station number twelve, for station thirteen - a Forest Gong, and for station sixteen - the Earth Xylophone. Since 2009, Forest Telephone, a Lithophone and a steel Slam Organ have been added to the collection. And in 2011 they were joined by a Sound Table that was developed specifically for Hoscheid. In April 2015 the collection was completed though the installation of a Flubbery Pipe.

NEW: Flubbery Pipe

The Sound Trail keeps growing. A large "sound microscope" that was developed in collaboration with the metal sculptor Stefan Schilling was installed along the trail in eary April 2015. This Flubbery Pipe detects and magnifies the quiet but magical sounds of the Schlinder Creek.

Sound Table

The newest installation the MobileMusicMuseum has created for the Sound Trail in Hoscheid is a Sound Table that was designed together with Stephan Schilling in June 2011. This festive table invites the wanderers to linger and to create a musical menu. Let yourselves be surprised!

Slam Organ

Installed in 2009, this installation allows visitors to thump out music on stainless steel pipes using flip-flops.

Lithophone

Installed in 2009, these stones produce tones that are determined by the thickness of the rock.

Sequence of tubes and bells

It’s easy to tune aluminum tubes; all you have to do is shorten the tube to exactly .9715 of its original length to raise the pitch by one half step. This sequence of tubes and bells is tuned to the key of G. Have fun playing your favorite songs!

Station 11: Forest Phone

A telephone that needs no network - make a call, why don't you? Perhaps someone will answer!

Station 13: Forest Gong

This large tubular bell is as long and as thin as a tree trunk. Only when it is struck with a heavy branch does a note blossom forth, lasting for a whole minute. Visitors can feel the resonant vibrations through their entire body if they stand close enough to the bell. By gliding their fingers delicately over the metal, they can also feel the “vibration node,” a vibration-free oscillation junction point located exactly 22.4% from the end of the bell. The reinforcement holes are also bored into this spot so the sound can bloom unhindered.

Station 16: Earth Xylophone

The Earth Xylophone was inspired by the huge xylophones found in Africa. Like them, the earth xylophone can also be played by many players at once. It was not designed so that players can play familiar tunes but rather so as to foster improvisatory teamwork encompassing various patterns of movement. Of course, the Earth Xylophone can also be used as a table, since tables are also important vehicles of communication, just like musical instruments are. The sound is amplified by a hollowed-out earthen space, which also allows players to feel the vibrations of the music throughout their entire bodies.
